The Week Ahead: October 1 to 5

A Great Start and Ready for October…

Last week was a wonderful week for our community. We celebrated Rowan’s Law Day and Orange Shirt Day. We also had a great Terry Fox Run as a community. Our Director, Mrs. Notten, and our Superintendent, Dr. Shoemaker, both visited the school and were pleased with the high level of engagement with the learning taking place. We all know how wonderful the Mighty Holy Spirit is, but it is always great when members of the Senior team see how great our community is too. We know it would not be the same place without our parent partners! We celebrated many of these moments on Twitter. If you get a moment, please follow us on twitter. Our handle is @HSFlames . A reminder to all parents that our new “Green Slip” system will be implemented on Monday. Please review the details from the Newswire below and if you have any questions please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher.

Construction Continuing on Junior/Intermediate Natural Playground

There is construction fencing in place around the work being done and students will be completely safe during the building process. We look forward to the final product which should be completed in 3 or 4 weeks, weather permitting.

Also, we would like to remind the community that there should be no video recording or taking pictures of our students on the yard. This is a safety concern and we ask that all parents respect our children’s right to privacy at school. Please see Administrative Procedure APC 023 on the WCDSB website for further information.

Collecting Gently Used Dump Truck Toys

There is a desire from our Kindergarten students in our ELKP area to play with outdoor Dump Truck Toys. If your family has passed this phase and would like to free up some space in your home, our Early Years team would appreciate any donations. We are grateful for any help you can provide in meeting this need.

Terry Fox Run was a HUGE Success!

On Thursday September 27th, 2018, Holy Spirit School participated in the Terry Fox School Walk.  As a community we raised $1,543.55  and exceeded our goal of a Toonie per student. Mrs. Freitas was instrumental in leading and organizing this school-wide event and we are grateful for her leadership. Well done Flames!

Spirit Wear is Available to Order!

Please check out the link below and order your spirit wear so it can arrive before the Christmas rush in December. We hope everyone will be able to wear some Holy Spirit Gear with pride.

Have Your Say as the Province Begins Education Consultations Across the Province

The government of Ontario has started its consultation process this Fall and is inviting parents to share their thoughts. Please visit the website below and have your voice heard about the direction the Ministry of Education should take with education in the coming months.

https://www.ontario.ca/page/for-the-parents

The consultations are intended to focus on the following topics:

  • How to improve student performance in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM);
  • How our schools are preparing students with needed job skills;
  • What more can be done to ensure students graduate with important life skills, like financial literacy;
  • How to build an updated and age-appropriate Health and Physical Education curriculum that includes subjects like sexual health education, mental health and the legalization of cannabis;
  • What measures can be taken to improve standardized testing;
  • What steps schools should take regarding the use of technology in classrooms, such as the use of cell phones; and
  • What elements would participants like to see included in the Ministry of Education Parents’ Bill of Rights.

Green Slip Behavioural Support System

Holy Spirit Families,

Consistent, exemplary student behaviour is something every school strives for and Holy Spirit School is no exception. The daily positive conduct of our student body is one of the qualities that sets Holy Spirit School apart from other schools in the community. We are proud of the efforts made by our staff to support families in our community as we partner with parents to help our students develop academically, while building character and nurturing faith formation.

As we continue to journey along the path of continuous improvement, we are implementing a new ‘Green Slip’ behaviour system that will support two of our community goals:

  1. Positive Student Behaviour
  2. Meaningful and Timely Communication with Parents

Essentially, we are asking all of our staff to continue to monitor student behaviour and encourage good decision making within our community. That expectation will never change. The new addition to the process is that when a student makes a choice that requires intervention from a staff member, the student is informed that their classroom teacher will receive a “Green Slip” about the incident. The classroom teacher will work with the student to make the situation right. Perhaps it is time to cool down and walk with a staff member on the yard at recess. Maybe it is an opportunity to write an apology for the behaviour. Perhaps the teacher is noticing a pattern of Green Slips and will request some increased support from the office.

Parents will not be left of out of the loop. Each time your child receives a Green Slip, a sticky label will be added to the agenda. At any time, if you have an inquiry about why your child received a Green Slip, please contact the child’s classroom teacher. They can provide you with the details of how your child was supported, and where the behavioural challenge was recognized in the school or yard. Should you notice a series of choices that have resulted in multiple Green Slip notices coming home in a day or week, we invite you to reach out to your child’s teacher. Once you have discussed the trend with the teacher, then we can work together to encourage your child as they strive to consistently make positive choices in the school and on the yard.

In the event a child makes a poor choice serious enough to warrant an immediate trip to the office, a Behaviour Incident Form will be completed and sent home to you directly. We are asking that you discuss the situation with your child, and return the form signed to the office the following day so the child can resume their normal school routine at recess breaks. Again, should you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out the classroom teacher or Principal/Vice-Principal about the situation you discussed with your child.

Example of the Behaviour Incident Form

While this system is new to Holy Spirit, it has been adopted from other local Catholic schools where it was implemented with great success. We are excited about the new process and we feel you will really enjoy the heightened level of communication around your child’s progress in their journey toward consistent, positive decision-making within our school community. This system has been communicated to our staff and students, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share this information with you over Newswire. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Thank you again for your continued support and partnership. Have a fantastic weekend filled with family, fun and friends!

Community Update Regarding June 29th, 2018

Holy Spirit Families,

It was brought to our attention that an issue occurred in the neighbourhood on June 29th that required police presence. On the day of the incident, nobody at the school was made aware of the incident by the police. When we raised the issue with the senior administration, the senior liaison from our board to the Waterloo Regional Police began discussions about the incident and requested a response so our community could have a clearer understanding of what took place that day.

Please know that safety remains our paramount concern at Holy Spirit School. If our school team feels that anyone is every in any danger with the information available to us, we will implement the appropriate protocol such as ‘hold and secure’ or ‘lock down.’ We honour the sacred trust we have with our parent community and will never hesitate to take any action necessary to keep all of our children safe.

The official response from Waterloo Regional Police Service is below:

The Waterloo Regional Police Service and Waterloo Catholic District School Board continue to have strong protocols in place to keep students, staff and the community safe.  The heavy police response on June 29th in the area of Holy Spirit Catholic School was not in relation to a call at the school.  Police were notified at approximately 3:30 pm as student’s were being dismissed.  As a result, a hold and secure was not possible.

Public safety is of paramount concern for the Waterloo Regional Police Service and the increased presence on that date, including that of the Emergency Response Team, was to ensure that members of the public were not put at risk.  As you can appreciate, our initial response to the information that we had available was to mitigate any potential concern for the safety of, not only the community, but also the school.  Once the incident was determined to be a hoax, our members left the area.

As we continue to learn from situations and strive to continually improve our response to incidents, our numerous social media platforms are updated with information that our community can access in addition to the numerous media outlets in our communities.

The Week Ahead: September 24 to 28

An Exciting Week Ahead…

It was so great to see so many Holy Spirit Families out at the BBQ. If you were not able to connect with your teacher, please do not hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher to book an alternate time. The week ahead is full of lots of great activities and 3 days with special clothing colours. On Wednesday, we are acknowledging Rowan’s Day and having special conversations around concussion safety. To honour Rowan’s memory, we are asking our students to wear Purple on Wednesday. To recognize Terry Fox and his great marathon, we are asking students to wear Spirit Wear or Red and White on Thursday. To honour our First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people affected by the legacy of Residential schools, we are asking everyone to participate in Orange Shirt Day on Friday. More information on Rowan’s Law and Orange Shirt Day can be found at:

Rowan’s Law

Please Complete Any Remaining Start Up Permission Forms…

In order for students to participate in Terry Fox and for us to celebrate them with Team pictures with their friends, we need all the permission forms completed online. Please ensure you have completed your initial start up permission forms on the web at schoolcashonline.

 Construction Continuing on Junior/Intermediate Natural Playground

There is construction fencing in place around the work being done and students will be completely safe during the building process. We look forward to the final product which should be completed in 3 or 4 weeks, weather permitting.

Also, we would like to remind the community that there should be no hard Frisbees on the yard. Please ensure your child leaves that equipment at home unless requested by the Ultimate Frisbee Coach.

Terry Fox Run THIS WEEK On Thursday, September 27th

On Thursday September 27th, 2018, Holy Spirit School will be proudly participating in a Terry Fox School Walk.  Over 8500 schools across Canada are taking part in the Run/Walk this year and that means that over 3 million students will be fundraising for cancer research in Terry’s name.  Here at Holy Spirit, we feel hat coming together as a school community for this walk allows us to celebrate the life of Terry Fox, his Marathon of Hope and it also allows us to show our incredible school spirit as we come together to help others. Students are encouraged to wear their Holy Spirit Gear or Red and White for this walk.

Our walk this year is an opportunity to take action, show leadership and make a difference in the lives of those battling cancer.  We are all touched by cancer in some way and it is up to us to take action. And so, for this year our fundraising goal is $1,300.00.  To help us reach our goal, each student is asked to donate a Toonie for Terry. We know we can do this! We are an incredible school filled with school spirit and we know we can meet this challenge head on, just like Terry did!

Spirit Wear is Available to Order!

Please check out the link below and order your spirit wear so it can arrive before the Christmas rush in December. We hope everyone will be able to wear some Holy Spirit Gear with pride.

Fire Drill Safety Week

Each term we conduct a number of safety drills to ensure we are prepared in the event of a real emergency. Please speak with your children about the importance of full participation in a safety drill. Fire drills should not be a surprise to any of us, and if your child experiences anxiety please remind them that the drills will be taking place throughout the week.

A Focus on the Fundamentals of Math

As a Province, we are transitioning toward the a Focus on the Fundamentals of Math. As we value our partners as partners, we wanted to pass along this guide to parents supporting this focus at home. Please take a few minutes to read over the material below when you have a moment.

Parents’ Guide to Focus on the Fundamentals

A recent publication by Kenneth Leithwood, a global leader in research on student achievement, stated, “A substantial body of evidence indicates that among all forms of parental involvement, high but realistic parent expectations, has the greatest impact on student achievement by a large margin.” (Principal Connections, Winter 2017 Issue 2) As we journey this year, please know how much of an influence you have on your child’s achievement. The greatest impact that you can make is to set and maintain high expectations for your children this year at Holy Spirit School.

And this week is filled with even more smiles…quite literally…PICTURE DAY IS TUESDAY! Everyone should bring their brightest smiles. But the smiles continue well after the flash and into the evening as we welcome all families to join us for our annual Meet the Teacher BBQ. The Week Ahead September 10 to 14

A Great First Week Back Flames!

We are officially back Flames and it was a wonderful first week. We have had some new families join our community and we are really excited about all of the great things that are starting up soon. For those families new to Newswire, this is our primary vehicle for communication with parents. We don’t send out traditional paper newsletters, as many of our families prefer the news to come directly to their phones. Usually we send this out each Sunday evening to ensure you are informed of ‘The Week Ahead,’ but we were experiencing some technical difficulties logging in outside of the school for the first time this school year. We will have it sorted out before next Sunday. We are all really excited to be back as a Holy Spirit family and look forward to partnering with you this year.

Please Complete All Cash Online Permission Forms

Strong Start Volunteers Needed

Holy Spirit School depends on a large number of volunteers to support our youngest students as they learn how to read. The Letters, Sounds and Words program is unique as it was designed to be easily implemented by volunteers in schools, including those with little to no previous experience working with children. Mrs. Thornton and Mrs. Rose are coordinating this program and would appreciate anyone interested in participating to contact them.

Please Don’t Wait To Get Your Volunteer Police Check

Holy Spirit School is a thriving community because of our incredible parent volunteers. We wanted to ensure everyone was invited early to participate in the life of the school and be prepared with a volunteer police check. Please see the attached letter below describing the simple process to get things rolling. We look forward to partnering with old friends and families new to the Holy Spirit community. All are welcome to participate!
