Halloween Reminders Part 2

Dear Parents,

Students at Holy Spirit will be wearing Halloween costumes on October 31st during our school fundraiser dance-a-thon.

In order to ensure that all of our students have a fun and safe day, there are a few guidelines that we would like all parents/students to follow with respect to costumes:

  • Costumes should not be such that they interfere with classroom activities
  • Students must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see and hear. No masks that cover the face.
  • No fake weapons of any kind are allowed.
  • Costumes that are provocative, revealing, sexual in nature, or employ questionable props are not allowed.
  • Costumes that depict violence, alcohol or drugs are not allowed.
  • Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage, ethnicity or religion are not allowed.
  • All students are asked to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the Christian values of Holy Spirit School and the WCDSB.
  • Appropriate and safe footwear must be worn.

Thank You for your support.

Lastly, If students wish to add glow sticks to their look tomorrow, they will be on sale (2 for $1). Please send your child with a loonie or toonie if they wish to participate.

Halloween Dance-A-Thon Reminders…

Holy Spirit Families:

Thank You so much for your participation in our Dance-A-Thon FUNdraiser. We have over 60 prizes donated and over $10 000 raised to support the students at Holy Spirit School. THANK YOU.

Please remember to have your child bring in a loonie or toonie so they can purchase a glowstick (2 for $1) for fun at the dance.

A few reminders about Halloween:

Please DO NOT SEND BAKING TO SCHOOL and NO NUTS with our children’s Halloween Treats too – THANKS!

Please check with your child’s teacher if you plan to on sending in treats. Classrooms that participate do a loot bag such that ALL goodies go home for parents to guide the child’s decision making re treats, allergies, etc. We also ask that you be extra careful in checking labels and avoid sending any Halloween treats to school that contain peanuts or nut products.  These items can be enjoyed at home.  As well, note that for both safety and re our honoring our parents wishing to be the decision makers in their child’s eating habits – we can not accept baked goods (i.e. cupcakes, cookies, etc.) sent to your child’s classroom at any time in the school year. Just contact your child’s teacher or the main office if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for understanding the need for this safety measure!

Thanks Everyone!

All Saints Day and All Souls Day

As Catholics, we are privileged to have a faith rich in history and tradition. Sometimes when secular holidays like Halloween get mixed in, it becomes even more confusing to know what exactly we are celebrating. But we are a people of Joy and Hope! We encourage you to take 3 minutes and watch this brief video explaining the various days that take place this week, and spend some time with your families honouring our loved ones who have passed on and the Saints (aka heroes of our faith).

Parish Update From St. Ambrose

Friday, November 2nd, Mass at 6:30 pm Catholics around the world will commemorate “All Souls Day”. At St. Ambrose Parish, an evening Mass will be held to pray for the souls of our family members and friends who have died.

Youth Ministry Volunteers needed. Youth Ministry also sometimes referred to as a youth group, is an age-specific religious ministry. The Catholic church views the youth as an important and integral part of the Church as a whole. Youth ministry aims to involve and engage with young people, making them feel welcome within the Church community. Unfortunately, this ministry is lacking in our parish and Father Irek would like to encourage some adults to come forward to take the lead in initiating a youth group. If you are interested or have questions please contact Father Irek at the parish office.

Holy Spirit Scares Hunger…

Last week our school pulled together to make a big a difference to our community. We donated over 15 boxes of tightly packed canned goods that will support families in need within our greater Cambridge community. Our Me to We team partnered with our Student Leadership Team to organize this food drive. Special thanks to Mrs. Lemos, Mrs. Hanley, Mr. Luciani, Mrs. Silva and Ms. Tremblay for their pivotal service and leadership in the We Scare Hunger campaign.

A Wonderful Thanksgiving Liturgy

The grade 2 classes led us in a wonderful Thanksgiving liturgy. Thank you to all who were able to celebrate with us. The altar is filled with the things that each class is particularly grateful for. Thank you to Mrs. Lojek-Smyth, Mrs. Martins and Mrs. White for your spiritual leadership to our community and your continued investment in the faith formation of our grade 2 students.

Construction Continuing on Junior/Intermediate Natural Playground

There is construction fencing in place around the work being done and students will be completely safe during the building process. We look forward to the final product which should be completed in 3 or 4 weeks, weather permitting.

Collecting Gently Used Dump Truck Toys

There is a desire from our Kindergarten students in our ELKP area to play with outdoor Dump Truck Toys. If your family has passed this phase and would like to free up some space in your home, our Early Years team would appreciate any donations. We are grateful for any help you can provide in meeting this need.

Have Your Say as the Province Begins Education Consultations Across the Province

The government of Ontario has started its consultation process this Fall and is inviting parents to share their thoughts. Please visit the website below and have your voice heard about the direction the Ministry of Education should take with education in the coming months.

https://www.ontario.ca/page/for-the-parents

The consultations are intended to focus on the following topics:

  • How to improve student performance in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM);
  • How our schools are preparing students with needed job skills;
  • What more can be done to ensure students graduate with important life skills, like financial literacy;
  • How to build an updated and age-appropriate Health and Physical Education curriculum that includes subjects like sexual health education, mental health and the legalization of cannabis;
  • What measures can be taken to improve standardized testing;
  • What steps schools should take regarding the use of technology in classrooms, such as the use of cell phones; and
  • What elements would participants like to see included in the Ministry of Education Parents’ Bill of Rights.

Holy Spirit Halloween Dance-A-Thon FUNdraiser

Holy Spirit Families:

Parent Council is really excited to let you know about our Halloween Dance-A-Thon Fundraiser. It will take place during the day at school on October 31st and it is going to be a LOT of fun! We are going to have lots of prizes for our participating students and we would like to invite you to join us in making this day fantastic. We are in the process of securing donations from our community partners, but we also recognize that many families within our own school community wish to support this initiative through providing some prizes for our raffle table. Specifically, we are looking for Gift Cards, New Toys or Games, or Activity Passes or Tickets for family fun. If you are able to contribute any of these items, it would make a huge difference to the students in our community. We will be launching the FUNdraiser with our students on Friday and we are excited to partner with you as we make Holy Spirit School the best it can possibly be for our kids! Please bring all donations to the main office as soon as you are able. We are grateful for your continued support and involvement in enhancing your children’s educational experience.
