A few friendly reminders before we head off for the break…

Student safety is always our number one priority here at the Mighty Holy Spirit.

We have noticed people are parking in our parking lot at the end of the day and trying to leave before the buses leave. We are asking that parents do not enter the school parking lot before or after school as it becomes a safety risk to our students.

We have also received a reminder from our Compliance and Standards Officer in regards to no parking zones. We would like to take a proactive approach and remind everyone of the bylaws in regards to parking in a no parking zone.

Parents picking up their children, are not permitted to park and wait in a No Parking Zone unless they are actively loading or unloading passengers or materials. Please see below the Traffic By-Law:

Traffic By-Law # 08-077 Section 4 (a) States:

  1. No Parking

(a) When signs establishing a “no parking” zone are on display, no person shall park a vehicle within such zone except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with a traffic control signal, sign, device, or the directions of a police officer.

We are very lucky to have such great neighbours across the street, Cornerstone Community Church has graciously allowed our parents to park in their parking lot while dropping off and picking up their children.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing everyone in 2019!

The Week Ahead: December 17 to 21

Week 3 of Advent: Joy

Advent is about preparation and reflection. At this point in the journey, we can’t help but realize that the Saviour is coming and we can experience a sense of Joy in all we do. Not the kind of joy that depends on how much we have, what car we drive or how many talents we have developed. It is the kind of joy that recognizes that Jesus came into this world because he wanted to…for us. Not for the person we are expected to become, but for the person we actually are. Simple, yet profound, unconditional love. That is the message that puts a smile on our face and that is the truth we want to convey to our students. Please join us in reminding your children this week how much they are loved and how we can experience joy as a people of faith together in the Advent Journey.

Primary and Junior Christmas Concert Monday at 1PM

Please join us on Monday at 1PM for our Primary and Junior Christmas Concert. We are asking all those in attendance to bring a donation of non-perishable food items for St. Vincent De Paul. Hope to see you there.

Christmas Turkey Lunch on Tuesday

If you haven’t had the opportunity to do so yet, please remember to pay for the Christmas Lunch via Cash Online. Also, please send a plate and utensils with your child so we can continue to keep this an Eco-Friendly event. A Huge Thank You to Parent Council for organizing the volunteers, making this possible and sponsoring the event!

Staffing Update

As Mr. Mastroianni transitions to his role as Vice-Principal, we are pleased to announce that Lisa Fossey will be returning to Holy Spirit to teach the grade 6/7 class. She is a very familiar face to Holy Spirit and we are excited to have her join us again.

Families of Holy Spirit:

It truly has been the highest honour and privilege of my career to serve as your Vice-Principal this past year and a half. The school is filled with incredible children, full of limitless potential supported by dedicated staff and remarkable parents. It brings me joy to think about the ways the world will be impacted by all that you will accomplish together. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your journey, and hope our paths cross again soon.

Mr. Hunt

P.S. Mr. Mastroianni, (or as the kids call him… “Mr. M” ) has been an incredible teacher leader at the school. I am certain if you speak with parents who have had a child in his class you will quickly learn how much he cares about Holy Spirit families and the high quality learning their children deserve. If there is any solace in leaving in the middle of the school year, it comes from knowing that Mr. M will be an excellent partner for you in your children’s education as we carry on the important work to be done as a community together.

Week 2 of Advent: Peace

Peace is such an important part of Advent, but it is easier said then done. Whether it is peace with extended family or simply a sense of peace when you are quiet and alone, peace is a lofty goal in any context. Fortunately, during Advent we take the time to remember that Jesus came to bring us peace, and as we wait for Him we can make choices that bring peace to others. Maybe it is an act of kindness to your neighbours. Perhaps it is about extending grace to the person ahead of you in the check out line price matching half the cart. It might even mean being kind to yourself and reminding yourself that there is nothing you can do to make God love you more and nothing you can do to make God love you less. We challenge the students to make Advent come alive in tangible ways, and we encourage you to take steps as a family to do the same. Talk about ways to bring peace to each other and the community as a family this week.

 Parish Update From St. Ambrose

A Family Rosary will take place on Friday, Dec. 14th at 6:30pm at St. Ambrose Church. All families and children of ALL ages are welcome, no child is too young nor too old to attend. After the Rosary we will have fellowship in the church basement. Please bring a snack to share. Refreshments will be provided. Please use side door off the parking lot. “To pray the Rosary for children, and even more, with children, training them from their earliest years to experience this daily “pause for prayer” with the family, is admittedly not the solution to every problem, but it is a spiritual aid which should not be underestimated” Saint Pope John Paul II

Children’s Mass will be held on Sunday, Dec. 16th at 11:00 am. Families with young children are invited to attend this Mass.  Children will be invited to sit in the Sanctuary for the homily.  Everyone is welcome! ….. What Is “Bambinelli Sunday?” Each year on the Third Sunday of Advent, children gather with their families in St. Peter’s Square for “Bambinelli Sunday.” The children bring with them figurines of the Christ Child — the “Bambinelli” — from their family’s Nativity scene. Here at St. Ambrose Parish, we invite children to bring their baby Jesus to our Children’s Mass on December 16th and Father Irek will bless their “bambinelli” baby Jesus figurine.

The Week Ahead December 3 to 7

Advent: A Time For Waiting and Preparation…

Advent is a time where we come together as families as we prepare to receive Jesus in a new and fresh way each year. One tradition many Catholic families adopt is an Advent Wreath. It is kept in the home in a central place and a candle is lit on each of the Sundays before Christmas. We will be doing this as class families at Holy Spirit, but we encourage you to do the same at home. The first candle is the candle of hope, often called the ‘Prophet Candle.’ It is lit first to symbolize the news that a Saviour will be coming and we can have hope that God will never forget us. There is a 2 minute video on Advent that goes over the big ideas if you want to check it out. Wherever you are at in your family faith journey, we encourage you to connect with your kids and go a little deeper into the season of Advent then you may have in the past.

Also, Please join us for our Family Advent Mass this Wednesday, December 5th at St. Ambrose Church at 7PM. We would love all of our families to celebrate with us.

Math Literacy Learning Session For Parents

It is taking place December 6, 4-5:30 p.m., St. Mary’s Parish Hall (Located in the Board Office at 35 Weber St. in Kitchener).

Are you a parent of a child in our Board? Would you like to learn more about how students learn math? This session will expose parents to a variety of experiences that will model the types of tasks students engage in.
