October Update!!

October Update!!

September has come and gone and we are now into the full swing of things. There were plenty of great highlights in September and we are looking forward to what October has in store.

O God, when I have food,
help me to remember the hungry;
When I have work,
help me to remember the jobless;
When I have a home,
help me to remember those who have no home at all;
When I am without pain,
help me to remember those who suffer,
And remembering,
help me to destroy my complacency;
be concerned enough to help;
By word and deed
those who cry out for what we take for granted.

Holy Spirit Volunteer Form

Strong Start

At Holy Spirit Catholic School we are fortunate to have the support from our community to offer a unique program called Letters, Sounds and Words.  Volunteers from our community help children aged five to seven learn the names of letters, the sound each letter represents and a list of commonly used words in print. This program coordinates well with the Ontario Curriculum expectations and has proven results.  It has been designed specifically for volunteers, who work with one child at a time and enjoy watching the child make great gains in only 10 weeks!

This program is offered to us by the Strong Start Charitable Organization, which is funded through donations from individuals, businesses, Foundations and community groups. You can read more about Strong Start on its website:  This program would not be possible without the generous gift of time from our volunteers, which Holy Spirit School is currently in need of.

If you or someone you know (friend/family member) is interested in this meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunity, please contact the school at 519-621-8973.

***A minimum time commitment of 30 minutes per week for 10 weeks is required.  Volunteers must attend two Strong Start training sessions offered this fall.  The training sessions are offered locally.

Parish Update

Children’s Catechetical Program Religious education for Grades 1 – 8 Again this year the Sisters of Our Lady Immaculate will offer a children’s religious education program, on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm in the Church Hall, starting October 3, 2019. The program is open to students in nonCatholic schools, as well as Catholic schools. Please contact Sr. Bernadette at to register or to inquire about the program. The registration form is also available from our parish website under “youth”

Our Children’s Liturgy program is offered at both 9:00 am Mass and 11:00 am Mass. At the beginning of Mass children will be invited to come forward to follow the leader downstairs to our Children’s Liturgy room. At the offertory, the children will return upstairs and sit as a group in the front pews for the remainder of Mass. (no registration required). ADULT VOLUNTEERS to assist with this program would be greatly appreciated. More hands make for less work. Please contact the parish office if you can help.

St. Ambrose Parish has committed to participate in the 40 Days For Life Prayer Vigil by covering every Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting Friday, September 27th and ending on November 1st (All Souls Day). The Vigil is held directly across the street from the Freeport Hospital, 3570 King Street East, Kitchener. Also, you are also welcome to attend the Prayer Vigil at anytime between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

School Yard Safety – Before and After School

Parents/adults are not permitted to enter the blacktop and school property during the school day. Just as we do at recesses during the day, we supervise and ensure the safety of students when on school property. These same measures – no adults and/or strangers on school property – will be in place for the full school day – between 8:40-3:55 PM. Parents of Kindergarten students can continue their drop-off and pick-up procedures that are currently in place.

The Safe Schools Act dictates that Parents and Visitors sign in at the office before gaining access to school property or spaces occupied by our students – we need to ensure we exercise the same safety measures as we start and end our day. Accordingly, we consistently have parents, visitors or strangers (construction staff, board staff, etc.) sign in at the office before gaining access to the school yard, hallways and/or classrooms at any point in the day.

Please see the attached document for a reminder of the Drop-off and Pick-up Zones:

Thank you for helping keep safety at the forefront of all we do at the Mighty Holy Spirit!

The traffic congestion at the front of the school has improved tenfold. Thank you for your support and understanding as we have been making Holy Spirit as safe as possible.

Community Safety: By-law Enforcement

Hello everyone. We are sending the Holy Spirit Community a direct link to the City of Cambridge By-Law Enforcement page to assist our community with access to information on when and how to report concerns. The page is very user friendly and will help in our continued effort to keep our school and neighborhood safe. The site explains how you can report by-law issues, when to notify police, and lists common by law complaints.  Thank for your continued support.

Peanut Butter Substitutes

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s);

It has come to our attention that there are a number of peanut substitute products that are currently being marketed as tasting “just like peanut butter”. As you are all aware, we have many students at St. Holy Spirit who have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and other forms of nuts.

While the good intentions behind the development of such products certainly can’t be argued, allowing students to bring the product into a school in which a student is known to be allergic to peanuts / peanut butter is problematic and could potentially have devastating consequences. However, should a food product that looks, smells and tastes like real peanut butter (but isn’t real peanut butter) be permitted in a school it places all of our staff in a position of having to decide definitively if the product is – or isn’t – real peanut butter. We are not qualified food experts and are in no position to make such decisions — particularly where exposure to real peanut butter can literally cause someone’s death.

Consequently, we would ask that you do not send any such product to school with your child(ren). If you have any concerns or questions about this, please feel free to give me a call at the school.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school safe.

Yours truly,

Paul Mendonca             Dan Mastroianni

Important Message re: Planned CUPE Strike

October 02, 2019

Dear Parent or Guardian,

On Wednesday September 25th, 2019, we received word that CUPE would be initiating a “work to rule” campaign in all of our schools and work places on Monday September 30th, 2019.  We are writing today to provide an update on the CUPE strike action which is currently taking place in our schools.

At WCDSB CUPE represents the following working groups:  Administrative Assistants, Early Childhood Educators, Educational Assistants, Personal Support Works, Child and Youth Workers, Lunch Hour Supervisors, Library Technicians, Communicative Disorder Assistants, Payroll and Accounting Associates and Computer Technicians.  In each case CUPE had informed us of “struck work”, which are duties that might otherwise be performed by these individuals, which is no longer occurring.

In all cases, our school safety and a Christ-centred learning environment remains of paramount importance to us, and our administrators are working diligently to ensure that we are compensating as best we can for the duties not being performed.  Having said that, it is important for all to acknowledge that it is not “business as usual” across the board, and in some cases compromises have been required, until we are through the job action.

This morning we received notice that a full CUPE strike may commence on Monday October 7th, if an agreement is not reached this weekend.  If the strike proceeds, this will mean CUPE members will not report to work.  As CUPE represents 1100 of our school based staff, we would not be able to safely operate our schools.  Therefore, IF the strike proceeds, we will be proceeding to closing our schools commencing Monday October 7th, 2019.

The declaration of and continuation of the strike is a result of central (provincial-level) negotiations and decisions that will be made at that level.  At WCDSB we do not currently control the decisions regarding the strike or its remedy.  Since there is a possibility that schools may be closed for an indefinite period of time, we recommend that you immediately begin making alternate plans for the care of your children, in the event that the strike proceeds.

We hope you find this update helpful.  Please note that updates are regularly being posted to our website and there is a Frequently Asked Questions section there as well, which may prove helpful.  In the meanwhile, we offer our prayers that CUPE and the government are able to reach a fast, fair and respectful collective agreement.

Sincerely yours,

Loretta Notten

Director of Education
