Holy Spirit Families: We are very excited to share our November Newsletter about the key dates and important celebrations taking place at Holy Spirit. All of the wonderful things happening in our school would not be possible without your continued support and partnership. As the cold weather is upon us and everyone brings out their hats and mittens, we know the thing that truly brings us warmth is our beautiful Catholic learning community. Thank you for everything you do to help make Holy Spirit School one of the best in the region.
HALLOWEEN CANDY DRIVE – Nov. 1-14th
Holy Spirit will be participating in a Halloween Candy Drive again this year. Students are encouraged to go through their loot bags from trick-or-treating and donate a portion to third world countries. We are looking for any type of firm wrapped candy: suckers, hard candies, gum, licorice, jujubes, Tootsie Rolls, toffee, jelly beans etc. The only things NOT accepted are chocolate, nuts and chips.
Most of the candy is donated to Canadian Food For Children and Dr. Simone. They deliver the candy to impoverished countries and the candy is used to induce starving children to eat. The candy helps to create saliva in the mouth, which helps children regain their sense of appetite. It is also used as a treat when children are given inoculations. Some of the candy is also donated to Operation Christmas Child as a sweet treat to add to shoebox sized Christmas gifts given to children in third world countries.
Last year our school donated over 75 pounds of candy. Let’s see how much candy we can get this year. WAY TO GO FLAMES!
Holy Spirit Book of Life – Begins Nov. 2nd
The word Halloween, remembered on October 31st, translates to mean “Holy Evening,” to denote the night before the Feast of All Saints on November 1st. The Feast of All Souls on November 2nd begins this important time of year. The month of November affords us a special time to honour the lives of our loved ones who are deceased and revisit our wonderful memories of these family members and friends who now reside with God in Heaven. We know that their spirit and love are still very much alive in our hearts and often they inspire us to do great things in our lives for others. Accordingly, a “Book of Life Sheet” will come home on Nov. 2nd for families to celebrate the lives of those they hold dear. If you wish, please complete this form as a family and return it to the school. Throughout November, we will include these family members as we pray to start our day as a school faith community.

there may be peace in our families.
Teach us to strengthen one another,
that there may be peace in our school.
Teach us to live and work justly, that there may be peace in our city.
Teach us to give equal respect and opportunity, that there may be peace in our nation.
Teach us to be peacemakers in all that we do.

Anti-Bullying Week – Nov. 19-25th – “Filling Buckets!”
Holy Spirit Catholic School is committed to creating a safe and positive school community. We learn about bullying, what it is, what we can do about it and how to “STAND-UP” against all forms of bullying. As well, we focus on building the kind of community that promotes a place for each and success for all. All staff and students have studied the book, How Full is Your Bucket, by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. Like the book, we strive to emphasize the awesome gifts within each of our students and their actions toward making our school community wonderful. Accordingly, we take the time to recognize students when they demonstrate behaviour that lets another community member know they are valued. We are a faith-centred environment, and strive to live out our school motto, such that, we are, “Witnesses to Hope.” Additionally, when staff notices a positive behaviour, they award the student a “PomPom.” We play a FUN Song every Friday morning and our classroom PomPom Buckets are brought down to fill our Holy “Spirit-Meter.” When we reach a new level on our Spirit-meter, the whole school shares in a community reward. Our students are to be commended for the wonderful ways they respect each other and build a positive school community. We are very close to earning another reward that will happen in November – Stay tuned! Keep up the great work FLAMES!

Roots of Empathy – Holy Spirit School Highlighted on CTV
It is wonderful that the Roots of Empathy Program has come to Holy Spirit School. This program teaches children about feelings – their own feelings and the feelings of others. Once every three weeks, a baby and the parent visit the classroom. A trained Roots of Empathy Instructor (Special thanks goes out to Mrs. Lord or Mrs. Cipric) will gather the children in the classroom around a green blanket and together they watch the baby grow. Many wonderful lessons are learned by having these tiny baby’s join our classrooms. We also want to thanks to Mrs. Lidstone’s Children: Thomas, Baby Richard and Baby Jason as well as our new moms and babies for this year, Lisa Adis and Baby Amelia and Jesica Madeiros Cranney and Baby, Charlie for sharing their wonderful family with our school community as we learn and grow together – our heart-felt Thanks!
